“A little hard on her, wouldn’t you say?” Shane asked, as he and Josh watched the cloud of dust behind the departing Explorer.

Josh threw him a derisive look and didn’t respond.

“She’s been busting her butt to help you.”

“Yeah, I know,” he said with an attitude. “Help a gimp, save the world.”

“Feeling a little sorry for ourselves, are we?”

Josh snapped back. “What’s this we business? Don’t see you sitting in this chair.” With all the strength he could muster, Josh spun the wheels in the gravel drive and made his way to the ramp at the side door. Beads of sweat dripped into his eyes from the effort, and he paused to rub them dry and catch his breath.

Shane pushed him up the long incline and this time Josh didn’t refuse the help. Once inside, Shane retrieved a couple of cans of beer from the refrigerator and held one out to Josh. He took it, feeling like a jerk and giving Shane his most contrite look. Shane turned a chair around and straddled it backward. He sipped his beer and seemed in no hurry.

Eventually, Josh slumped in his chair, the fight seeping out of him. “Guess I handled that well, huh?”

Shane swiped at the moisture on the can.

“About that crack a minute ago—”

“Forget it.” Shane lifted his can and drank.

Josh shook his head and released a long sigh. “Look, Shane...if it weren’t for you, I’d be toast. You had nothing to do with the rest. When are you going to stop beating yourself up over this?”

Shane finished his beer and set it down with a clang. “When you’re out of that chair and back to normal.”
